We recently ran a survey of 3,000 women across America to uncover the most attractive professions for a man. The surprising results are illustrated in the interactive map below.

Key Findings

  • Firefighters rank as the most attractive career in multiple states. It appears that the courage, bravery, and community service associated with this profession resonate deeply with women across various regions, perhaps due to the combination of physical fitness, heroism, and reliability that this role embodies.
  • Lawyers also have a broad appeal. The respect, intelligence, and perceived stability associated with a legal career seem to be attractive traits for women in these areas, possibly due to the profession’s association with power, influence, and the ability to advocate effectively.
  • Veterinarians are winners in a few states - the nurturing, caring nature of those who dedicate their lives to animal care likely translates well into a perception of kindness and compassion in personal relationships.
  • Unique state preferences: Some states have distinctive preferences that reflect local culture and values. For example, Oregon favors winemakers, highlighting the state’s appreciation for fine wine and artisanal crafts. Similarly, Alaska’s alternative preference for wildlife conservationists aligns with the state’s rugged natural environment and the importance of preserving it.
  • Security and Stability: A man's profession often signals his ability to provide financial security and stability, which can be key factors in a woman’s dating decisions. Professions like lawyers, doctors, and tech entrepreneurs are frequently associated with higher income potential, which might explain their attractiveness across multiple states.
  • Social Status and Prestige: Certain careers carry a high level of social status and prestige. In states like New York, where hedge fund managers are favored, the allure of power, influence, and the ability to navigate complex financial systems could be significant factors. A prestigious career can elevate a man’s desirability as it often suggests success, ambition, and competence.
  • Passion and Drive: A man's passion for his career can be very attractive, as it shows dedication, ambition, and a strong work ethic. Women may be drawn to men who are deeply committed to their professions, as this can indicate a level of focus and drive that might also translate into personal relationships.

Cultural and Regional Influences: The importance of a man’s career can vary greatly depending on cultural and regional influences. For example, in tech-heavy areas like California, innovation and entrepreneurship are highly valued, while in more rural areas, professions that involve care for the land or animals might be more appealing.
